Book Power Exchange Review :

I enjoyed this book, really, but... I am also very conflicted by a lot of it. This book is very well written; there is intelligent dialogue, the storyline is intriguing and many of the characters are engaging but there is also a lot I had trouble with specifically the actions of, and the decisions made by, the main character, Gavin. Read the following with caution as there are SPOILERS ahead... Seasoned detective Gavin falls very easily into the submissive role (there is little to no hesitance) especially considering his relationship with the other MC, Ben, is his first foray into a gay relationship. He goes directly from unhappily married to a (unbeknownst to him) cheating, harpy of a woman (what a stereotype!)to a sexual relationship with a MALE Dom. Where is the breathing room (no pun intended)? Where is the, let me take a MOMENT to figure out who I am and what I am looking for in my next relationship? This issue was skimmed over very quickly as if it were an impediment to pushing the BDSM centric story along. Okay, so, the two MC's have a semi-instant connection while working together on a murder case targeting BDSM participants but within a very short time span Gavin is willing to submit to a Dom's initial (albeit tame) demands? Gavin's transition felt unrealistic not to mention I felt there was a lack of heat/chemistry between the two men pretty much throughout the book. Their play scenes lacked passion and the non-sexual "affection" between the two was flat. The only play scene I enjoyed/sensed chemistry was when Ben was prepping Gavin with the clamps & plug for their outing to Collared. IMO, Ben seemed cold & calculating throughout the book. Gavin also had me questioning his personal intelligence given he's indulging in similar BDSM practices that the serial killer is using on his victims and with a Dom he barely knows. Gavin also meets with the killer privately thus falling prey to the killer. Seriously? The reader can see who the serial killer is a mile away but the DETECTIVE cannot?! SMH. Additionally, for Gavin to agree so early in his relationship to a public outing at a BDSM club, especially as he's the known lead investigator in the crime(s), seemed like poor judgement. Why would he so willingly potentially undermine his professional standing in such a fashion? All to satisfy his Dom? Oooo-kay. This was not my first time at the BDSM rodeo but there are certain practices I find disturbing and or boring. Boring/unsexy: ropes. I just don't get it but writer's preference. Disturbing: use of multiple sensory deprivation in a single scene. Just hearing what Ben wants to do to newbie sub Gavin made my skin crawl. Just as Gavin's super quick agreement to such a scene in the future and ordering a deprivation suit did. Again, SMDH. The pluses of this book for me were few but strong. I appreciated Myah and how confident and capable she was portrayed, how compassionate and protective. I enjoyed reading about Cole & Gavin's relationship and was relieved that they are solid given the extreme revelation of Gavin's orientation and sexual practice preferences. And I really, really loved Gavin's internal struggle while watching Zach and Nick's final scene. This play scene itself was well written and not too over the top and not only was it emotional for Gavin but for me as well. As this book was a mixed bag for me, I'm not convinced I will continue with the next three books of the series. I am not a Ben fan (and his seemingly passionless persona) by any stretch of the imagination so it seems unlikely. I'll have to wait and see if I want to delve into the Power Exchange world again. If I do, it will be to see if Gavin has grown personally and professionally.
Going into this book, I was hopeful but also ready to be disappointed. Knowing this genre has plenty of misfires and less than original writing made me skeptical at best even with the good reviews, and being a writer myself makes me even more of a critic about style and flow in a story, but I'm happy to report I was absolutely blown away. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading most of it in one day!Every time I picked up this book, I was reading at the edge of my seat, chewing my lip, and hanging on every word, because for me the equal mix of the sexual tension, the exploration into the lifestyle, and Gavin and Ben's blooming relationship along with the murder mystery was perfect. I tried to explain it to my husband and ended up going with "It's like if a much better version of 50 Shades of Grey met La Noire" (sorry, that's a video game, but it's one of my favorites so it's relevant.) If you're into detective mysteries and BDSM novels with taste, this book is definitely for you because both sides are very well written. Even if the killer was pretty obvious throughout the second half of the book, it didn't bother me because I liked the story so much overall I was more than willing to look passed it. In fact, it had me even more on edge because I was screaming at Gavin in my head and terrified for him as he made his biggest mistake towards the end of the book.I'm well into Safeword now and am still just as enthralled. I will certainly be looking for more work by this author because I'm loving every word.
