Hulk in Hell is where I personally feel the series has been at its highest point thus far, and that’s saying something when every volume in this series has been top tier stuff. It picks up right where the last volume left off in the aftermath of The Immortal Hulks fight with Crusher Creel. All of the protagonists of the series have been pulled into hell along with Hulk and Creel, and it leads to a major insight and the first true reveal of The One Below All.Everything about it is fantastic, Joe Bennett’s art is at a high point, the Demons and the One Below All are fantastically drawn. And it even brings a favorite character in Rick Jones back to the series. Creel takes a shocking character turn that has made him more compelling. And Hulk shows off his true power. There’s a lot to love about this volume. It is maybe tied for the best single volume of any story I’ve ever read. I agree with the others. This book is kind of a mess. To begin, the art is inconsistent issue to issue (and, also, generally pretty ugly). Next, the story tries too hard to link things together with too many retcons for my taste with characters dying and coming back to life all over the place. There is also an effort to place a pseudo religious element onto the Hulk mythos that continues from previous issues. On top of that, readers are told Gamma is both [SPOILER WARNING] science and magic now. Both innovations seem an interesting idea, but the narrative just doesn’t hold my attention. Finally, on top of everything, Amazon shipped my book in a huge package (nearly triple the size of the item), and the book arrived bent. Par for the course, I’m afraid.
